Accents in Spanish, umlauts in German, or diacritics in Arabic may not always be properly included in electronic texts. Machine translation performance may be improved, when training and test data is consistently corrected for such deficiencies (Diab et al., 2007).
Bertoldi et al. (2010) carry out a study with artificially misspelled words to assess the effect on machine translation performance, and suggest some methods to overcome spelling errors.
