Forward Transliteration

The transliteration of Japanese names into English, or conversely the translation of English names into Japanese is an ambiguous task, often no standard transliterations exist.

Publications

Normalization of corpora may be useful (Ohtake et al., 2004). Another interesting problem, which has been studied for English–Chinese, is that the foreign name should not be rendered in a way that suggest a negative impression by containing characters that have negative meaning (Xu et al., 2006). Also, when transliterating names into Chinese, the original language of the name and its gender matters, which may be incorporated into a transliteration model (Li et al., 2007).
